Hair loss (also called alopecia) can be the result of heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions or a normal part of aging.

Alopecia areata is a condition that causes hair to fall out in small patches. The extent of hair loss and regrowth varies from person to person.

Androgenic alopecia is the most common form of hair loss. It is a hereditary condition that occurs gradually with aging and has predictable patterns (a receding hairline and bald spots in men and thinning hair along the crown of the scalp in women). Androgenic alopecia can be treated with topical minoxidil or with systemic finasteride.

Frontal fibrosing alopecia is a form of lichen planopilaris. It causes scarring hair loss, which means it won’t grow back.

Traction alopecia is a form of hair loss due to pigtails, braids or cornrows, or to the use of tight hair rollers.
